A joint team of security operatives comprising soldiers and officers of the State Security Service (SSS) Thursday raided a hideout of Boko Haram members at Gidandare area of the Sokoto metropolis, killing 1 suspected Boko Haram member while 1 terrorist was captured.
The security operatives, who invaded the hideout of the insurgents and engaged them in a gun duel that lasted for about 6 hours, also rescued 5 women and 6 children.
Addressing journalists in Sokoto Thursday, the Commander, 1 Brigade, Nigeria Army, Brig-Gen. Mohammed Tasiu Ibrahim, said the security operatives invaded the terrorists’ hideout around 2:a.m. following a tip-off but were resisted by the insurgents, who engaged them in a gun battle that lasted for over 6 hours.
According to him, in the course of the operation, one terrorist was killed while the other one was captured by the security operatives.
He expressed disgust that despite the fact that it was the holy month of Ramadan, some terrorists were bent on unleashing mayhem, destruction and spilling blood of innocent citizens.
Ibrahim stated that items recovered from the terrorists included 6 AK 47 rifles, 1 pump action rifle, 7.62 millimetre ammunition, 13 improvised explosive devices, 12 locally made time bombs, nine millimeter pistol, 5 packets of electric cables and 56 detonator cables.
Others were 13 magazines of ammunition, 32 batteries, 56 SIM cards, three memory cards, 10 cartons of milk, 3 handsets, N76,685, plate number, axe, sledge hammer among others.
He stated that in keeping with the rules of engagement, 11 family members of the terrorists which included 5 women and 6 children of various ages were currently in custody. “In line with the rules of engagement, none of the 11 family members of the terrorists was killed. So, 6 children and 3 women are in good condition while 2 other pregnant women are currently receiving ante-natal care at the military clinic,” he said.
The brigade commander advised the people of the state to be wary of letting their property to unknown persons without conducting a background checks on such individuals.
He therefore, assured the public that the Nigerian Army would remain undaunted in the onerous task of safeguarding lives and property of all Nigerians, especially during the Ramadan period.
