Lagos Deportation Palaver
Posted on 02:56 by Unknown
The last has not been heard about the Lagos Deportation of so-called 'destitutes' to their states of origin. Interestingly, investigation by the Vanguard has revealed that some of the citizens dumped at Onitsha, Anambra at 3.20 a.m. do not hail from there. Amongst them were indigenes of Delta, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, etc.
This untidy act by Lagos state government is a giant step backward for the unity of Nigeria. Consequently, the APC political party should expect to meet its waterloo at the polls in the South East & Niger Delta come 2015.
This whole drama also shows there is a lack of creativity, sincerity and compassion in tackling our social problems- of which urban migration is one. For instance, the ban of Motorcycles has not completely stopped 'Okada' from plying highways. It has definitely helped to magnify the problem of corruption in the police force. It is known by all that some seized motorcycles are returned to the owners after money has exchanged hands.
Out of a population of 16 million in Lagos, how many destitutes will be repatriated to their states of origin? After all, anyone living on less than $1 daily can be classified as destitute. This is only a perfect example of how to compound a problem, and not solve a problem.
