The Butler is the film to look out for- I foresee an Academy Award sweep. This Lee Daniels movie tells the story of a White House Butler, who served 8 American presidents over 3 decades.
The film traces the dramatic events that shaped the American society, from the civil rights movement to Vietnam and recent history, and how those events affected the butler’s life and family.
Forest Whitaker plays Cecil Gaines (The Butler) and Oprah Winfrey as his wife Gloria Gaines. This is Oprah’s first appearance in a film in over 15 years.
Other stars in the ensemble cast include John Cusack, Cuba Gooding Jr, Jane Fonda, Lenny Kravitz, Robin Williams, James Marsden, Terrence Howard, Vanessa Redgrave, Alan Rickman, Liev Schreiber, Melisa Leo and Mariah Carey.
Also the Nigerian-Hollywood actor David Oyelowo stars as the Gaines' rebellious son, Louis.
After watching the documentary about the true-life butler, Eugene Allen, whose real-life account inspires the film, I feel casting Forest Whitaker as the butler is a miscast. I mean Eugene Allen was suave and smart. But Whitaker does not pass that image across- perhaps I'm still haunted by his chilling performance as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland- just 9jaFlave opinion.
The movie opened at the cinemas on Friday 16th August 2013.
