Serena Williams (World No.1) won her 5th US Open title in a thrilling final against Victoria Azarenka (World No.2) on Sunday September 8. The American, 31, overcame the determined Belarusian to win 7-5 6-7 (6-8) 6-1. Congratz.
Williams has now won 17 Grand Slam singles titles, moving her to within one of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, and seven short of Margaret Court's record total of 24.
This victory makes Serena the oldest US Open women's winner since tennis turned professional 45 years ago, eclipsing Australian Margaret Court, who was 31 years when she won the title in 1973.
