Banana Thrown at Italy's 1st Black Minister During Speech

Posted on 16:06 by Unknown

Italy’s 1st black Minister has condemned a spectator who threw bananas towards her while she was making a speech at a party rally on Friday.

Integration Minister, Cecile Kyenge, who was born in Democratic Republic of Congo, has angered far-right groups with her campaign to make it easier for immigrants to gain Italian citizenship. She has been a target of racist slurs since her appointment in April.
Shortly before the incident on Friday, members of the right-wing Forza Nuova group left mannequins covered in fake blood at the site of the rally in Cervia, central Italy. This was in protest against Kyenge’s proposal to make anyone born on Italian soil a citizen.

'Immigration kills,' was written on leaflets accompanying the dummies - a slogan Forza Nuova has previously used when referring to murders committed by immigrants in Italy.

Although the bananas missed the stage where Kyenge was speaking, she responded to the gesture on Twitter, calling it 'sad' and a waste of food, considering the economic crisis.

Kyenge has faced regular insults since becoming minister, often from other politicians.

Earlier this month a senior parliamentarian in the anti-immigration Northern League party likened her to an orangutan and only apologised after a storm of criticism.

‘When I see images of Kyenge I cannot help think, even if I don’t say that she is one, of a resemblance to an orangutan,’ he said.

Bloodbath in Egypt: Over 120 Dead and 1,000 Injured

Posted on 15:46 by Unknown

SAD. More than 120 people are believed to have been killed at a protest in support of Egypt's ousted President Mohammed Morsi, according to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Security forces are reported to have started shooting demonstrators shortly before pre-dawn morning prayers at a round-the-clock vigil in Cairo being staged by backers of Morsi, who was removed from power by the army 3 weeks ago.

Makeshift field hospitals around the area near the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque were overwhelmed, with one doctor telling the BBC that more than 1,000 had been injured.
Reporters at the scene said firing could still be heard hours after the troubles started.

'They are not shooting to wound, they are shooting to kill,' said pro-Morsi Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad.

'Protesters replied by hurling rocks and started building walls,' said Ali, who was injured in an accident as he ferried wounded on his motorcycle from the fighting to a field hospital.

Blessing Okagbare Sets Another 100m Record to Win Final (Video)

Posted on 14:49 by Unknown

Blessing Okagbare produced double African Records on her way to claiming a well deserved victory in the 100m Final at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in the Olympic Stadium, London, on Saturday.

A 10.86secs finish time in the semi-final was bettered by another 10.79secs in the final as the Delta-born athlete recovered from an average start to power to victory ahead of Barbara Pierre of United States, who came 2nd with a joint personal best of 10.85secs.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Kelly-Ann Baptiste came 3rd in 10.93secs, while Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce failed to recover from a poor start to finish 4th in 10.94secs.

“I just wanted to put up a good race and I’m so excited,” Okagbare said after the race. “For me, I just want to do my best and I’ve been working hard and have tried to stay on top of my recovery.”

Looking on to next month’s IAAF World Championships, Okagbare has successfully put behind her the poor memories of London 2012 by producing a wind assisted (+1.1mps) personal and season best of 10.79secs at the London IAAF Diamond League meeting and she hopes to get better than that.

Super Eagles Qualify for CHAN, Beaten by Cote d’Ivoire

Posted on 14:04 by Unknown

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are through to the 2014 African Nations Championships (CHAN) to be hosted by South Africa. The Super Eagles advanced on a 4-3 aggregate score despite losing the 2nd leg, final round qualifying game 0-2 to the Cote d’Ivoire at the Robert Chambroux stadium in Abidjan on Saturday.

A 4-1 first leg win in Kaduna 3 weeks previously had put Stephen Keshi’s troops on the box seat but the Ivoirians gave their West African neighbours a huge scare with an energetic start that fetched 2 goals inside the 1st 25 minutes.

Kevin Zougoula gave the Super Eagles their first fright when he capitalized on a wayward Azubuike Egwuekwe back-pass to smack home an opportunist effort past Chigozie Agbim in the 7th minute.

This will be the first time Nigeria will be participating at the CHAN.

Blessing Okagbare Sets New African Record in Women's 100m

Posted on 12:14 by Unknown

Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare has broken the African Women’s 100 metres record at the ongoing Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in London after posting an impressive 10.86 seconds winning time in the 2nd semi-final of the Women’s race.

Okagbare has been in tremendous form lately as she also leapt 7m recently to become only the 2nd Nigerian lady after Chioma Ajunwa to do same.

Expectedly, Okagbare tops the list of 19 athletes to represent Nigeria at next month’s World Athletics Championships in Moscow where Nigeria hopes to end her 13 years of medal drought.

Coming behind Okagbare to place 2nd in the 2nd semi-final is America’s Barbara Pierre; while fellow African, Murielle Ahoure of Cote D’ivore came 3rd. The other contestants were Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad & Tobago, Verena Sailer of Germany, Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands, Asha Phillips of Great Britain and Annabelle Lewis, also of Great Britain.

The final race is set for later today.
