Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria, Ashraf Salama, on Wednesday said the ouster of Mohammed Morsi as the Egypt President was not a military coup but peoples wish.
In an interview with journalists in Abuja, Salama, who noted that people were the core of democracy, expressed the hope that Egypt would emerge stronger from its present situation, urging the international community to respect the will of the people.
He said, “We gave him a chance but unfortunately his government did not fulfill its promises and did not meet peoples expectations. He did not also fulfill the promises he made to the people before he got to the throne. Under him, our debt profile in one year increased from about $33 million to $45 million.
“There was a lot of suppression within the one year. It was not a military coup because the military will not give you 48 hour notice before taking over the government. When he came into power, instead of gaining grounds and implementing peoples oriented policy that will improve the welfare of citizens, he never did.
“The military had no choice than to stay on the side of the people because staying on the side of Morsi is like staying against the people. Contrary to media reports, he was not championing any religious cause because if he was, he would be caring to people. The revolution was peoples coup and it has to be respected.
“Morsi has a lot of hidden agenda. There was no single project for the welfare of the people.”
Asked about the safety of Morsi, Salama said he was being kept in safety for interrogation.
Morsi was toppled by the country’s military after days of protest near the Presidential Palace.
